It’s time to unite the Overworld – Minecraft Legends is out now on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5|4, Steam, Windows 11|10, PC Game Pass, Xbox Game Pass, and Xbox Cloud Gaming. And on select Samsung Smart TVs, players can try Minecraft Legends in the Gaming Hub, no console required.

Minecraft Legends’ story

The teams at Mojang Studios (in Sweden, the United States, and around the world) and Blackbird Interactive (Canada) gave everything we could to this game for over four years and we’re so excited to finally share it with the world.

Over the course of those years we’ve wrestled with geography, time zones, the pandemic, and a new hybrid way of making games together, and through all of that we learned a lot about what it means to make “a Minecraft game.” Because Minecraft Legends is a Minecraft game, through the choices you’ll make and the surprising world and (hopefully) all the derpy charm of our blocky universe. But it’s not Minecraft Minecraft, and as we approach our launch that’s still pretty scary for us. It’s a tall order to take a game universe players know so well and make it totally surprising but at the same time very familiar.

In Minecraft Legends, you play as a brave hero, uniting the inhabitants of the Overworld to fight off a devastating piglin invasion. Nether portals have appeared all over the once-peaceful Overworld, bringing piglins and spreading netherrack, and it’s up to you to lead the charge and destroy them before the corruption covers everything! In this game, mobs that you would typically fight or avoid in the original Minecraft will become your friends and fight alongside you. The story of Minecraft Legends is one that’s been passed down through time in the Overworld, so who’s to say whether it’s real or not? The truth is nobody can, so it’s up to you to discover it and craft your own theories!

Minecraft Legends’ gameplay

In Minecraft Legends, you play as the hero! You might think that means you’ll be doing all the fighting, but actually: you’ll be doing all the leading. In Legends you’re not the only fighter, and in fact, your allies are better equipped to deal with the piglins than you are. Your task is to summon new friends and lead them in battle to defeat the rampaging piglins. You will have to defend villages, destroy piglin bases, and more to push back the piglins’ Nether corruption. Different allies have different strengths and weaknesses, which when used wisely can give you the edge in battle.

In true Minecraft fashion, you must also make sure that you don’t run out of resources, so that you can keep spawning allies and building defensive or offensive structures. Exploring the Overworld is also important: it’s how you meet new friends and discover new resources, and even treasure! Plus, you’ll get to experience a new Overworld each time you play through the campaign, because every playthrough generates a unique map.

Minecraft Legends’ play modes

Minecraft Legends’ story can only be experienced in campaign mode, where you fight to save the Overworld solo or in co-op with up to three friends. In co-op mode, you share the same resources with the other players, but each player has their own allays to gather and build with. In addition, the difficulty doesn’t scale as more players join, so the battle will become easier with more players by your side.

PvP mode is where you get to face your friends in intense matches. In public matchmade games, you will be split into two teams of 4 players. You need to protect your base while coming up with devious plans on how to destroy your enemy’s! Whichever team is the first to destroy the other’s base wins. But don’t forget that resources are also shared and just as important in PvP, so make sure you explore the map to secure them early, and remember: Always. Be. Gathering.

Lost Legends

Lost Legends is another way to experience more of Minecraft Legends after you’ve completed the campaign – aside from doing it again, of course. Lost Legends are monthly challenges that you’ll be able to download at no extra cost to test your skills in unique scenarios. And just like the main game, you can play there with up to three friends in co-op mode. Once you win, you will receive that month’s exclusive cosmetic reward!

If you can’t wait to get your sword stuck into new strategies, then I have good news! The first Lost Legend is available now. In Portal Pile, you must protect your village from 20 waves of increasingly tough piglins. If the village fountain is still standing after the attack, you (and your friends, if they join the fray) will win the exclusive Portal Buster armor for your hero! But don’t count your golems before they’re spawned – this is a very difficult challenge, so there’s a tough battle standing between you and your prize.

Minecraft Legends editions

You can choose between the Standard Edition of Minecraft Legends (i.e. the base game) for $39.99 USD and the Deluxe Edition for $49.99 USD, which includes the base game and the Deluxe Skin pack for a discounted price. The Deluxe Skin Pack includes one hero skin and four mount skins, plus an additional mount skin when it becomes available post launch. You can purchase the Deluxe Skin Pack separately for $14.99 USD as well, but the Deluxe Edition saves you $5!

The Minecraft Legends Marketplace

Just like its counterpart for Minecraft: Bedrock EditionMinecraft Legends’ Marketplace is where you can get extra, curated content for your game made by community creators as well as Blackbird Interactive. Right now, the selection is limited to hero and mount skins, but in the future we’ll be releasing new experiences called Myths, which include DLCs, mini-games and more. Make sure to check this space or the in-game marketplace for updates!
